Angel Tree Book Drive for Literacy

The Angel Tree Book Drive for Literacy provides students a way to make a difference in the life of a child through the simple act of purchasing a book.  After being made aware that many children who are living below the poverty level in our area often don’t own their own books, the Volunteer Action Center and the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity partnered together to organize efforts to get books in the hands of every 5th grader at Holcomb Elementary.

Children at Holcomb are given the opportunity to share their “wish list” of a book they would like to call their own.  During the first weeks of November VAC volunteers and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity members staff a table outside the bookstore encouraging fellow students, staff and faculty to purchase a book- by taking an “Angel” from a Christmas Tree that has a child’s book request on it into the bookstore and purchasing the book for the child.  After the books are purchased they are each given a special bookmark and delivered to the eager young readers at Holcomb.

“Thank you for the book that you all got me I really liked my book it was full of adventures and action but my favorite part was the ending but I can’t tell you- it will spoil the surprise if you want to read it!” Thanks Joseph
