DLI Presenters

Program proposals can cover any number of topics connected with diversity, inclusion, and leadership. Program proposals are due by March 25th. Each session will last 50 minutes and presented in one of three educational session blocks. Accepted programs will be notified by March 27th.

Microaggressions: Name It, Claim It

Presenter: PJ Martinez

  • “But you don’t act like most of your people, so where are you really from?” Like the previous statement, we repeatedly hear these microaggressions with various marginalized students on our campus. The purpose of this workshop is to explore the concept of microaggressions by providing student leaders concrete examples, opportunities of reflection, and tools on how to “name and claim” microaggressions on our campus.
TRANS* SPACES ON CAMPUS: BEYOND THE GENDER BINARY

Presenter: Laura Wohlford & Ali Selman Berger

  • The purpose of this program is to start a dialogue among the University of Arkansas student leaders about the ways that gender influences our lives and shapes our campus. We hope to stimulate a discussion surrounding the gender binary and the obstacles that trans* and non-binary students face on our campus. We will focus specifically on trans* and non-binary students living on campus and spaces on campus where gender diverse students feel they can be themselves.
THE UNSPOKEN TRUTH: MARGINALIZED AND COST OF EXCELLENCE

Presenter: Adrain Smith

  • The purpose of will examine the psychological, physical and social cost for individuals from marginalized group in their pursuits of excellence. The stress, anxiety, depression and even suicide often stems from the pressures of Impostor Syndrome to wanting to capture concepts like Black Girl Magic.
RELIGION VERSUS SCIENCE: IS IT POSSIBLE TO EMBRACE BOTH?

Presenter: Greg Foster

  • We is smarter than me. Using a circle process and interactive discussion, participants will share insights and ask questions about what a worldview that respects, even embraces, various faith traditions AND believes in the validity of the scientific approach might look like. The presenter is from a Christian tradition, but all faiths and non-faiths are welcome to participate respectfully.
STAND UP! YOU ARE KING: IDENTIFYING THE BLACK PANTHER IN YOU

Presenter: Caree Banton

  • This program imagines UARK as a canvas on which students from different backgrounds write, bringing their different personalities and gifts to bear. The power at stake in this universe is an education that extends beyond book learning to self-discovery. In the absence of dreams, fantasies, and all else, taking hold of the value of oneself has the potential for making the greatest possible impact in this student universe.
